In August 2010, the DePuy Orthopaedics unit of Johnson & Johnson recalled the ASR™ Hip System used as a hip implant after more than two years of complaints and complications.
The ASR Hip System manufactured by the DePuy Orthropaedics unit of Johnson & Johnson has been recalled due to a variety of product defects. Patients who have had the hip implant installed have been complaining about complications with the product for over two years.
This hip replacement recall affects the following products:
- ASR™ XL Acetabular System
- DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System
Patients have complained of the following problems with their ASR™ Hip System:
- Loosening, when the implant does not stay attached
- Dislocation
- Fracture, where the bone around the implant may have become cracked or broken
Patients may feel discomfort or pain, and in some cases, may even
have to undergo an additional artificial hip replacement surgery.
